Bogus calls warning

The Society has become aware that some solicitors have been contacted by people professing to be from the Society who are not in fact employees

The Society has been informed that some solicitors have been contacted by people professing to be from the Law Society of Scotland but who are not in fact employees of the Society. Some of these bogus staff members have contacted firms with the intention of acquiring information about the firm or organisation’s employees for recruitment purposes. One solicitor contacted was told that it was in connection with organising a seminar.

The Society advises that anyone contacted by the Society who is unsure whether or not the caller is a Society staff member, to contact the Society on 0131 226 7411 and our Records Office will be happy to check the caller for you. You can also check the name of anyone who contacts you by going to” Management Staff” in the “About the Society” section of the Society’s website at www.lawscot.org.uk. It is also important to bear in mind the details of the Data Protection Act when giving out details of your firm or organisation and these should be checked with the firm or organisation’s data protection officer before being given out.

Details of the Society’s seminars are also available on the Update and the In-house Lawyer sections of the Society’s website.

The Society would be grateful if any member contacted by a bogus staff member would inform the Society in order that appropriate action may be taken.
