Instructing counsel made easier

The service offered by Instruct Counsel Ltd, for solicitors seeking to have some control over fee levels and turnround times for work

A new service has been launched for solicitors intending to instruct counsel and looking to have some control over fee levels and turnround times for work, as well as getting the right advocate for the case.

Instruct Counsel Ltd is the creation of former personal injury solicitor Gordon Stead, who believes that the haphazard system of sending instructions through advocates’ clerks needs to be tightened up to deliver service standards similar to those to which, for example, solicitors acting for insurers have become used in recent years.

Not a competitor in the legal market, in that it neither provides legal advice nor acts as a correspondent firm, Instruct Counsel offers to deliver all written work within five working days, by engaging one of a chosen pool of advocates who will deliver work within that time to an agreed fee.

Operating mainly in personal injury cases, though also handling commercial work, the company promises no extra cost to solicitors, and charges only for work actually carried out, by not charging cancellation fees. Instructions can be given online, with documentation to follow if necessary.

“I hear the same stories from solicitors all over the country about not knowing which counsel to instruct, or how to have some control over work being passed on”, Stead told the Journal. “We believe that many cases, even in the sheriff court, do benefit from counsel’s involvement, but solicitors and clients need a more predictable service.”
