Law Society of Scotland supports schools chess tournament

The Law Society of Scotland has launched a further initiative to support school pupils by sponsoring a rapid chess team championship.

The event, to be held at Scone Racecourse on Saturday 17 February, will be run for the Society by Chess Scotland. The organisation’s Schools Development Director Craig Pritchett said: “Chess Scotland is very pleased to be working with the Society on this exciting new event. We hope to see the competition grow as successfully as the Society’s flagship national schools debating event.”

Society Chief Executive Douglas Mill, himself a keen player in his Paisley Grammar School days, said that like debating, chess taught the strategy skills and mental hardness that a lawyer needs to develop. “There is probably nothing that prepares you better for a career in the law than playing chess”, he commented.

Any solicitor interested in helping with the Society’s project should contact Douglas Mill.
