Ex-prisoner wants £349 for loss of designer gear

1 March 2006

A criminal is seeking £349 from the Scottish Executive for the loss of designer clothes that he says went missing while he was on remand.

Joseph Hughes was cut free from his clothes and the wreckage of his car after he crashed it while being chased by the police after breaking into and stealing from a policewoman's flat. He claims his girlfriend then bought him replacement clothing, which included Burberry, Armani and Moschino items.

While he was held on remand at Perth Prison these clothes were bagged up by prison staff and subsequently disappeared. Mr Hughes was awarded the £349 last year when lawyers for the Scottish Executive forgot to respond to his small claim action.

However, Executive lawyers subsequently had the case recalled within a 21-day time limit and are defending his claim in court.

Yesterday Mr Hughes gave evidence at Perth Sheriff Court in support of his claim. Further evidence is due to be heard later this month.
