Police impounding uninsured drivers' cars

New police powers against unlicensed or uninsured drivers have resulted in hundreds of cars being impounded by Scotland's forces.

Figures released yesterday by Lothian and Borders, Tayside, and Dumfries and Galloway police show that in the eight weeks since the powers came into force, nearly 400 vehicles have been seized.

As with cars removed for being illegally parked, drivers have to pay a substantial sum to recover their vehicle and must also produce evidence that cover has been taken out. Cars not claimed in this way may be scrapped.

Motoring organisations have welcomed the announcement as good news for law-abiding motorists, who pay higher premiums due to the extent of evasion of the law on compulsory cover.
