Online help for witnesses

A new interactive website for witnesses attending court outlining what to expect is launched today.

Funded by the Scottish Executive, the website is aimed at reducing anxiety for those attending court. Separate areas specifically for children, young people and adults each provide information on being a witness, going to court and what to expect when giving evidence.

The site also includes virtual tours of a criminal court and a children's hearing court proceeding.

Deputy Justice Minister Johann Lamont said: "The new website, with its clear, user-friendly format, will further help reduce the stress and anxiety associated with attending court and ensure witnesses can play their full part in giving evidence so that justice is done."

The website can be found at www.witnessesinscotland.com.

Also launched today is a new series of booklets from the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service, designed to help witnesses giving evidence in the district, sheriff or high court.

Solicitor General John Beckett QC said: "The booklets do not replace the assistance that can be given to certain vulnerable witnesses or those giving evidence in certain criminal cases, such as racist crime or sexual offences, by the Victim Information and Advice Service, but I am sure that they will help go a long way to alleviating any fears witnesses may have."
