Flyposting targeted in planning advice

Local authorities are to receive new guidance on how to tackle illegal flyposting in a bid to stem the growth of the practice.

A new Planning Advice Note from the Scottish Executive, Control and Management of Fly-Posting, encourages councils to work with companies that use flyposting to promote business or events, and discourage illegal postings.

Outdoor advertising is the fastest growing type of advertising in the UK, but legitimate street advertising, such as roadside billboards and banners, has been brought into disrepute by the rise in flyposting.

The advice note calls for local authorities to promote the use of alternative legitimate sites, to take enforcement action against offenders, and to recover costs for removing unauthorised adverts.

Deputy Communities Minister Des McNulty said:

"Fly-posting is an unsightly and costly problem for local authorities, which damages the environment of urban and rural areas. This advice will equip councils with the latest information on what measures are available and effective in combating this unsightly nuisance.

"We want people to take pride in their community. Fly-posting can make an area look rundown or neglected. It's not good for business, tourism and investment."
