Law officers are both solicitors

24 May 2007

Solicitors will fill both law officer posts in the new Scottish Executive, after it was announced yesterday that Frank Mulholland QC is to be the new Solicitor General.

Mr Mulholland is a solicitor advocate whose career, like that of Ms Angiolini, has ben spent in the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service, including as an advocate depute.

In 2001 Ms Angiolini became the first solicitor to be appointed Solicitor General, and last year she became the first to achieve the office of Lord Advocate. She retains her position despite the change of Executive, but as reported yesterday, will not have a place in cabinet.

This is the first time that neither law officer post has been held by a member of the Faculty of Advocates.
