George Heriot's School's Foundation
George Heriot’s School’s Foundation has offered free education to the children of widows living in Edinburgh and Lothians since 1659. This has recently been mirrored by the Governors of the Trust to include James Hardie bursaries to the children of widowers, and they hope to raise awareness among solicitors of the help which is offered to bereaved families.
The Edinburgh-based independent school, which has around 1,600 pupils, is dedicated to providing excellence in education and also to following the charitable ethos of its founder, George Heriot. There is a strong commitment to assisting children from poorer backgrounds, which is enshrined in the school's Foundation and its awards of educational bursaries.
Fraser Simm, Treasurer of the Foundation, said: “By the nature of their work, I believe that solicitors will often come into contact with families who may be able to benefit from funds provided by the Foundation and the education offered by the school. The school is among the most highly regarded in Edinburgh and we regularly receive applications from bereaved mothers. It’s important that fathers are also aware of the help which may be available to their families.”
