New practice rules

Two sets of practice rules were approved at the Special General Meeting on 28 September 2007 and have now received the concurrence of the Lord President.

The Solicitors (Scotland) Accounts Etc (Amendment No 2) Rules 2007 take account of the changes required to be made to the Accounts Rules arising from the Money Laundering Regulations 2007. They come into force on15 December 2007. Further information on the Regulations can be found by logging onto www.lawscot.org.uk/Members_Information/moneylaundering .

The Solicitors (Scotland) (Client Relations Partner) Practice (Amendment) Rules 2007 have been revised following comments made at this year’s AGM so that a time limit is placed on the responsibilities of a client relations partner for subsequently made complaints following the dissolution of a firm. A client relations partner will continue to have responsibility for:

(a) complaints made against a practice in the period of two years after the date of the dissolution or cessation of that practice; and

(b) complaints made against the practice before that date, until conclusion of the complaint. These rules come into force on 15 January 2008.
