Gun law summit planned for Scotland
The reform of firearms legislation will be discussed at a summit in Scotland later this year.
Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill has invited Home Secretary Jacqui Smith to host the summit jointly. The date will be confirmed once interested groups such as gun control campaigners, shooting groups and law enforcement officials have been contacted.
The summit aims to pave the way for a comprehensive review of existing legislation, making it easiser to understand and enforce. This was the aim of a Home Office consultation in 2004.
Mr MacAskill said that Scottish communities wanted tougher laws to tackle gun crimes, particularly as firearms casualties in the country had risen by a quarter in the last year.
The Home Office has yet to respond to the invitation to take part.
