Lib Dems call for review of home leave rules

18 July 2008

The Liberal Democrats have asked Justice Secretary Kenny McAskill to review the rules on home leave for prisoners after three inmates failed to return to prison.

John Cartledge and Dennis Smyth were granted home leave and have been missing since Wednesday after failing to return to Castle Huntly open prison. Simon Lister failed to return to Noranside prison.

The Liberal Democrats’ chief whip, Robert Brown said the situation was “disgraceful” and that inmates should not be wandering round unsupervised in the community.

Cartledge is serving an eight-year prison sentence for serious assault, Smyth is a convicted housebreaker and Lister was sentenced to seven years in 2004 for assaults and robberies.

Tayside Police have asked anyone who knows where the men are to contact officers.
