Court fees up from tomorrow
Civil court fees rise from tomorrow under the Scottish Government's policy of recouping a greater percentage of the cost of running the courts from litigants.
The increases, which have been criticised by lawyers and consumer interests as restricting access to justice, see Court of Session fees rise by an average of 49%, and sheriff court fees by an average of 31%. Fees will then rise in April 2009 and April 2010 to allow for the effects of inflation.
Fees in the Office of the Public Guardian also rise, with the fee for registering a power of attorney going up from £60 to £65.
