Call for "college" name to be protected

4 November 2008

The Association of Scotland's Colleges has called for greater legal protection for colleges.

Representatives from publicly funded institutions will meet with Government officials to ask for the same legal protection that is given to universities. They are concerned that private education providers can use the word "college" in their title, whatever the quality of the services they offer.

Ann McKechin, Parliamentary Undersecretary at the Scotland Office, said she would be meeting with the association. Any change in the law would be a matter reserved to Westminster, which has responsibility for the 1985 Business Names Act.
