Two solicitors among the honours

Two prominent Scottish solicitors are among those whose achievements were recognised by the Queen in the New Year Honours list.

Edinburgh man Dr Andrew Cubie receives a knighthood for public service. As well as a former chair of the Napier University Court and the CBI in Scotland, Dr Cubie formulated the proposals that led to the abolition of upfront tuition fees for Scottish students, and has also played a part in the current structures of devolved and local government.

Professor Alan Paterson of Strathclyde University becomes an OBE for services to the law and legal education. An author of both student and practitioner textbooks and a researcher into the provision of legal services, Professor Paterson has also served on the Council of the Law Society of Scotland, the Judicial Appointments Board for Scotland and now the Scottish Legal Complaints Commission.
