Community service in Glasgow delayed by industrial action
A strike by community service supervisors in Glasgow which has been going on since January has led to hundreds of offenders being unable to start their community service, according to The Herald.
It says there is now a backlog of approximately 300 cases. Dozens more are unable to complete their orders within the statutory one year from their sentencing.
Glasgow City Council is being forced to apply to the courts for extensions.
The Scottish Government is attempting to reduce the number of criminals being sentenced for minor offences being sent to jail, with community service being promoted as an alternative.
