Society-backed schools chess runs again

There are just over two weeks left for school chess teams to enter the annual Secondary Allegro Team Championships and National Secondary Championships, supported by Chess Scotland and the Law Society of Scotland.

This year's competition, the third, will take place at Dunfermline Football Club on Sunday 14 March.

The schools tournament consists of secondary school chess teams, with three players per team, playing at an allegro time control of 25 minutes per player, per round against opposing teams competing from throughout Scotland. In comparison the national secondary championships is an individual event for club players. Both events are organised by Swiss pairings, with all players playing in every round.

Gordon Brewster, Director of Central Services at the Law Society of Scotland, said: “The Society is working closely with Chess Scotland in organising this event and looks to build on the success of previous years. The sponsorship of Lindsays solicitors is greatly appreciated in making this event possible.”

Tournament organiser Lynsey Shovlin said: “These high quality chess championships would not be possible without the sponsorship of the Law Society of Scotland, who have provided significant support in promoting chess to secondary schools in Scotland.”
