SYLA launches new season's programme

A joint event with the Equality & Human Rights Commission, and an address by the immediate Past President of the American Bar Association, are among the first events of the new season's programme announced today by the Scottish Young Lawyers' Association.
First up is the Equality Act and EHRC evening seminar, on Thursday 20 September at Edinburgh University (7 Bristo Square). Speakers including Claudia Bennett, senior solicitor at the EHRC, will discuss the operation of the 2010 Act, its significance for legal practices and the role the EHRC plays in Scotland.
The following Thursday, 27 September, SYLA continues its popular “So you want to be" series, on "So you want to be an employment/pensions lawyer?" Taking place at Burness's office in Glasgow, practitioners in employment and pensions work will describe what they do.
The annual lecture is on Tuesday 9 October 2012 at 6pm in the George Hotel, Edinburgh, with Bill Robinson, ABA immediate Past President On the same night, in Dundas & WIlson's Glasgow office, the latest session in SYLA's “Beyond the Basics” series tackles "Handling Distressed Assets".
Further events run through to June 2013 and the annual conference in Glasgow. Details will be announced in due course.
President Fiona McAllister said that education remained a key aim of SYLA, which was set up in 1974 to educate, entertain and represent young lawyers across Scotland. She commented: “Since its inception, the SYLA has produced interesting, relevant and affordable professional development and learning opportunities for young lawyers, and this was recognised in 2012 with the SYLA awarded 'Legal Training Provider of the Year' at the Scott & Co Legal Awards. SYLA places great emphasis on maintaining a culture of learning and development for young lawyers and we are looking forward to welcoming our members back after the summer break to our first training events in September and October.”
