Death of former Sheriff Principal O'Brien
Sir Frederick W F O'Brien QC, former Sheriff Principal of Lothian & Borders, has died at the age of 95 following a brief illness, it was announced at the weekend.
Educated at the Royal High School, Edinburgh, and Edinburgh University, Sir Frederick was admitted to the Faculty of Advocates in 1947 and became a Queen's Counsel in 1960. He first served as a sheriff principal in Caithness, Sutherland, Orkney & Shetland between 1965 and 1975, and following reorganisation of the sheriffdoms became Sherff Principal of North Strathclyde from 1975-1978, when he was appointed to Lothian & Borders, where he served until his retirement in 1989.
He was also convener of the Sheriffs Principal from 1972-198, chairman of the Sheriff Court Rules Council from 1975-1981, and a former chairman of the Business Committee of the General Council of Edinburgh University
