The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors in Scotland has launched a Surveyor Ombudsman Scheme which will apply to all chartered surveying services offered across Scotland. The Ombudsman will consider complaints involving maladministration, poor service, negligence, incompetence and financial loss up to £25,000.
All RICS member firms must have a complaints handling procedure, which remains the first port of call for any customers unhappy with the service received. If they are dissatisfied with the outcome, the consumer can take their case to the Ombudsman, Ian Smith, a member of the Law Society of Scotland, the Society of Local Authority Chief Executives and the British and Irish Ombudsman Association.
Marketing materials explaining the scheme to consumers have been distributed to bodies including Solicitors’ Property Centres and a number of individual firms.
