Union calls on Scottish Executive to bring in corporate killing law
Offshore union leader Jake Molloy is calling for the Scottish Executive to bring in its own corporate killing law.
Speaking at a conference in Glasgow, Mr Molloy of the Offshore Industry Liaison Committee, set up in the wake of the Piper Alpha Tragedy, said that he was tired of waiting for Westminister to introduce the legislation.
“For seven years we have been waiting for the Labour government to honour its promise to change the law. Scotland should stand alone in the area of corporate killing and set an example for the rest of the country.”
Mr Molloy highlighted the case of Gordon Moffat from Fife who died on the Santa Fe Magellan rig in the North Sea in October 2000. He said: “The company responsible was fined £60,000, which is no deterrent for a company with a £370m turnover. We want tough measures introduced linking the fine to size of the company’s turnover.”
The Scottish Executive is understood to be monitoring the progress of Home Office proposals on corporate manslaughter.
