New tagging scheme for accused
An electronic monitoring scheme for those who would otherwise be refused bail is to be piloted next April
An electronic tagging scheme which could provide an alternative to prison for those awaiting trial for serious offences, will be piloted in April next year.
Under the scheme people who have been refused bail can apply to be electronically monitored rather than sent to prison on remand, under section 17 of the Criminal Procedure (Amendment)(Scotland) Act 2004.
A Scottish Executive spokesperson said: “This is an additional bail condition in cases where the court would otherwise have imposed a custodial remand, not an additional measure in cases where the individual would, in any case, have been granted bail.”
He added that no decision has been made yet on where the pilots will be run.
He said: “When Ministers have agreed on the proposed sites for the pilot they will bring those proposals to Parliament for approval.”
