Clear-up rates for crime in Scotland are at an all-time high according to a new report published by HM Chief Inspector of Constabulary.
Andrew Brown, in his first annual report since taking up the job, said that detection rates reached 47% and that recorded crime has dropped one per cent in the past year.
This was fuelled by the falling numbers of crimes of dishonesty, in particular theft of motor vehicles which was down 16% while theft from motor vehicles and housebreaking fell by 12% and 10% respectively.
Andrew Brown said that overall “the picture of Scottish policing is one of positive progress against declared plans”.
He said: “There is always scope for improvement and HMIC has made a series of recommendations aimed at enhancing the delivery of policing in Scotland.
“Nevertheless, we have found that the police forces and organisations in Scotland were generally efficient and delivering good quality services to the public in the fight against crime.”
The report also showed that complaints recorded against Scottish forces rose by 57 to 2880.
