Number of drink driving women soars

Scots women caught drunk driving reach record levels

The number of women being convicted in the Scottish courts of drunk driving has reached record levels, new statistics have revealed.

Alarmingly, the figures show that women are now catching up on the number of men being caught over the limit.

In 2002,  more than a thousand women were convicted, compared to 724 the previous year, a rise of 47 per cent. The number of men convicted also rose: 7791 compared to 6069 in 2001, an increase of 28 per cent.

Senior police officers and and road safety campaigners have expressed their concern at the rises and are now bracing themsleves for further increases when the figures for 2003 are announced.
