McConnell pushes smoking ban despite split

First Minister determined to legislate in face of cabinet split and trade campaign

First Minister Jack McConnell wants to press ahead with a ban on smoking in public places in Scotland despite opposition from some of his ministers and a vigorous campaign by the licensed trade, it is reported today.

The issue is due to be debated by his cabinet next week, which is expected to approve the proposals despite doubts among some members over the wisdom of introducing an all-out ban.

Jack McConnell said yesterday: "We are not going to be pressurised by any side of the argument... [Our decision] will not be in the interests of public opinion. It will be in the national interest."
