Mail return address essential

Royal Mail introduces new requirements for franked mail to bear a return address for it to be returned when undeliverable

The Society has been advised by the Royal Mail of a change of policy regarding undeliverable mail.

Royal Mail handles 21 million franked items of mail a year that are undeliverable or marked “return to sender”, but have no return address on the outside. Two thirds of these are eventually destroyed. Without getting these items back, businesses cannot update their mailing lists and continue to waste money on postage and other costs.

It is now a condition of service for franking machine customers to include an external return address (preferably centrally located at the top rear of the envelope) if customers want undeliverable mail back, as undelivered franked mail without a return address will be disposed of. Customers who wish to use their franking machine to add the return address should consult their machine supplier – Royal Mail have issued guidelines to suppliers. Customers who wish their name to remain anonymous within the return address should contact Royal Mail Sales on 08457 950 950 for a box number.
