Lawyer sent to high security hospital

Lawyer who shot a man in the head to be detained in Carstairs pending reports

A judge has ordered that a lawyer who shot a man in the head with a hunting rifle be detained in the State Hospital at Carstairs.

Lord Menzies told Matthew Sylvestre at the High Court in Edinburgh that he would be kept in the psychiatric hospital for 12 weeks pending sentence for the shooting.

This will give doctors time to assess whether Sylvestre has a condition that can be treated.

Orginally charged with attempting to murder his victim Rinaldo Coluccia, a jury convicted the former New York lawyer of a reduced charge of assaulting him to his severe injury and permanent disfigurement.

The court heard that the incident happened after Coluccia overstayed his welcome when invited to the accused's Morayshire cottage, and relations between the two deteriorated.
