MSP bid to scrap "not proven"

Labour MSP plans bill to end the three verdict system

A Labour MSP is calling for the "not proven" verdict to be abolished in the Scottish courts.

Michael McMahon hopes to bring a private member's bill to the Scottish Parliament early next year in a bid to end the three verdict system.

He said the not proven verdict leaves neither side in criminal cases satisfied and that his many colleagues were supportive of at least reviewing the system.

The father of Amanda Duffy (19), who was murdered in Hamilton in 1992, welcomed the news. The man accused of her murder was acquitted with a not proven verdict.
