First female vice dean for Faculty
Advocates elect first female vice dean in Faculty's 500 years
Valerie Stacey QC has become the first woman to be elected to the office of Vice-Dean since the Faculty of Advocates was founded in 1532.
The 50-year-old silk was elected unopposed and succeeds Roy Martin QC, who became Dean of Faculty earlier this month.
Born in Lanark and educated at Elgin Academy and Edinburgh University, Mrs Stacey has been in practice as an advocate since 1987 and was made a QC in 1999. A former solicitor, she has served as an advocate depute and temporary sheriff and is currently a member of the Sentencing Commission for Scotland.
She has appeared in many major cases during almost two decades at the Scottish bar, including the fatal accident inquiry into the Wishaw e.coli outbreak and an inquiry into suicides at Corntonvale Prison.
Mrs Stacey is only the second female office-bearer in the history of the Faculty. Dame Margaret Kidd served as Keeper of the Advocates Library from 1956 to 1969. There are currently 463 practising advocates.
