Major international conference on interface of rights coming to capital
Human rights and intellectual property rights are the focus of an international conference to be held in Edinburgh next month.
"Towards Utopia or Irreconcilable Tensions: the interface between intellectual property, competition and human rights" is to be held on 2 and 3 December 2004.
It will look at the conflict between the two, which occurs in areas as diverse as access to medicines for AIDS sufferers in South Africa to the control of music downloads from the internet.
The event will bring together speakers presenting a broad range of perspectives, from academia to the UK Competition Commission and international organisations, including UNESCO and the World Trade Organisation.
Charlotte Waelde, Co-Director of the AHRB Centre and organiser of the conference, said: "The conference is an excellent opportunity to try to combine academic consideration of legal questions, the role of business and profit in modern society and altruistic concerns to produce one sustainable model to address a variety of real global problems."
