Lewis community vote for compulsory purchase under Land Reform Act

Three hundred residents on the Pairc estate on Lewis have become the first community to exercise the right to buy estate land not put on the market.

By a large majority the community voted to apply to Scottish Ministers for consent to buy the common grazings with sporting and mineral rights, under the Land Reform (Scotland) Act 2003. The estate is owned by Barry Lomas, an accountant in Leamington Spa.

The residents now have six months to present proposals to Ministers for a decision.
