New scheme to treat repeat offenders

Justice Minister to unveil training camp plans for repeat offenders

Car thieves and housebreakers could escape jail sentences in favour of rehabilitation in the community.

Cathy Jamieson is today expected to announce a national rehabilitation programme, first developed at the Constructs training camp in west Dunbartonshire.

It will offer offenders courses in victim awareness, debt management, control of aggression and alcohol and drugs misuse.

Ms Jamieson will also confirm the introduction of tagging for the prisoners released on bail, while low-risk prisoners approaching the end of their sentences will be released with a tag under home curfew conditions.
