710 knives seized by police

More than 700 knives have been seized in street crime crackdown

More than 700 offensive weapons and 6,157 litres of alcohol were seized during a two month crackdown on street crime in Scotland, police revealed yesterday.

The majority of the anti-social behaviour occured in the Strathclyde force region where 428 knives and 370 other offensive weapons were confiscated along with more than 4,000 litres of alcohol.

Chief Constable Ian Latimer, who chairs the Association of Chief Police Officers in Scotland, said that it was a very successful campaign and that the figures made 'sobering' reading.

He said: "I give a firm pledge to the communities we serve in Scotland and to the people who commit these crimes: 'Do not think that our work is finished with the end of the campaign. We are dedicated to working with our communities to eradicate these crimes and to make our streets safer."
