Reliance blunder stops trial

Judge criticises "administration error" of insufficient guards

A judge criticised Reliance Custodial Services after he was forced to abandon a sitting of the High Court due to lack of security guards.

Lord Hardie, sitting at Forfar, reprimanded the company after it became clear that there were not enough security officers available to guard an alleged rapist appearing on the first day of his trial.

The company put this down to "administration error" resulting in staff being delayed at Arbroath and said it had taken steps to ensure a dedicated team of officers at Forfar.

Reliance's contract with the Scottish Prison Service has now been rolled out across the whole country after an initial postponement following a series of mishaps.
