Legislation to protect children comes into force today

New legislation comes into force today to help protect children from people who could put them at risk.

The Protection of (Children) Scotland Act 2003 creates a list of people not considered suitable to work with young people.

From today, disqualified people will commit an offence if they apply for work or continue to work with children.

The list will be maintained by ministers and from April 11 all organisations will have to check whether people they are appointing are on it or risk committing an offence.
