Report shows half Scotland's prison population comes from 155 council wards

Half of Scotland’s prisoners come from the poorest 12% of council wards, according to a new report.

It shows that people from areas of deprivation were far more likely to end up in jail than those in the more affluent wards. Almost four in 100 of 23 year olds in the most deprived areas of Scotland are in prison.

The figures, compiled by a former Barlinnie prison governor Roger Houchin, cross-checked the inmates’ postcodes with government indices of deprivation.

Houchin found that in Glasgow the Royston ward of the city contributed the most prisoners, in Edinburgh Craigmillar, Aberdeen Woodside and Dundee Hilltown.
