The number of offenders tagged electronically rose by 54% last year

New figures reveal that the number of offenders to be monitored by electronic tagging has soared by 54%.

Between April 2003 and 2004 Scottish courts made 807 restriction of liberty orders compared with 524 in the previous year, according to the criminal justice social work statistical bulletin.

It also showed that 7,428 community service orders (including 2,255 probation orders with a requirement of unpaid work) were made in 2003-04, a one per cent increase over the previous year's total of 7,359.The total of 7,428 equates to 20.7 orders per 10,000 population.

Justice Minister Cathy Jamieson said the figures suggest increasing confidence by courts in community disposals.
