Call for surrender of airguns

Cathy Jamieson is launching a campaign to get airguns off Scotland's streets today

Justice Minister Cathy Jamieson is launching a new leaflet to raise awareness of the potential danger of airguns today.

The leaflet, "If You Don't Need It, Get Shot of It", will remind owners of the legal constraints on airgun use and encourage families and individuals with airguns at home to consider handing them over to the police.

The campaign follows the tragic death of two-year-old Andrew Morton, who was killed earlier this month with an airgun.

Air weapons that are no longer wanted or needed can be handed in to any local police station in Scotland. The appeal is backed by the Association of Chief Police Officers in Scotland. Leaflets will be widely distributed across Scotland after the Easter holidays.

The Scottish Executive is already contributing to an ongoing review by the Home Office of existing firearms legislation. Scottish Ministers are urging that all options are considered as part of that review.
