Scots firm wins top award

MacRoberts sole Scottish winner at European legal awards

MacRoberts was the only Scottish firm to win an accolade at the highly prestigious International Financial Law Review European Awards Ceremony at the Savoy in London.

The Restructuring of the Year Award went to the two-year, £2 billion-plus restructuring of British Energy in which MacRoberts worked alongside Clifford Chance for the Scottish-registered quoted company.

The exercise included – all under Scottish law – the creation of two new PLCs, two highly complex schemes of arrangement, one for creditors and the other for shareholders, and a reduction of share capital.

It culminated in approval obtained in the Court of Session in Edinburgh for the schemes of arrangement, enabling British Energy’s relisting on the London Stock Exchange the next working day.

“The Scottish court really demonstrated its capacity and adaptability to take on complicated company law cases and deal with them fairly and expeditiously,” Ian Dickson, head of corporate at MacRoberts said. “Given these were very much City of London transactions, they cannot help but to have shown Scottish courts and advisers in an extremely good light.”
