New Peebles court opens

Converted council chambers now operating as sheriff and district courts
Court hearings have returned to Peebles after a four year gap.
New court premises are operating in the Scottish Borders Council chambers and adjoining offices in Rosetta Road. After the original courthouse was found four years ago to have extensive dry rot which prevented the building being modernised economically, the council in October 2003 approved proposals which would allow its building to be used.
Facilities installed include a videoconferencing link with Edinburgh Sheriff Court
Phase two of the project, expected to complete in early 2006, includes the building of a police station to replace the existing High Street station, creating a "one stop" justice centre with the police, courts and relevant council offices being located under one roof - the first project of its kind in Scotland.
