The Crown has recovered £673,000 in civil proceedings through the Proceeds of Crime Act

More than half a million pounds has been recovered in a civil court case through the Proceeds of Crime Act - the largest amount to date.

The Crown Office use the Act to take the case to court despite there being no related criminal proceedings against the two men in the case.

Following a search of domestic and commercial premises in Kilmarnock in July 2003 by HM Revenue and Customs, a number of suspect bank accounts were identified and frozen.

The Crown Office said: "The Court of Session ordered on 29 April that £673,000 be paid to the authorities under the Proceeds of Crime Act - the largest ever recovered so far in Scotland through civil recovery."
