Canadian supreme court judge to give annual lecture at Bute college

One of Canada's top judges will deliver this year's UHI Annual Lecture on 1 October at Argyll College UHI's Mount Stuart centre on the Isle of Bute.

Supreme Court judge, the Hon Madame Justice Rosalie Silberman Abella, will share her specialist knowledge in equality and employment issues.

“We are delighted to welcome such a notable speaker to this year’s lecture,” said UHI Principal, Professor Bob Cormack.

“UHI takes pride in its commitment to equality of opportunities for all. And it is particularly appropriate that Madame Justice Abella comes to speak in Scotland at a time when the Scottish Executive is confronting racism in this country through its 'One Scotland' campaign.

“I invited Judge Abella to address an audience of legal and political leaders in Northern Ireland 15 years ago and it was one of the most engaging and stimulating lectures I had ever heard. I believe her knowledge and opinions could greatly enhance and progress the current debate in Scotland."

UHI Millennium Institute was designated by the Scottish Parliament in April 2001 as a higher education institution. It provides university-level education and research through a partnership of 14 colleges and research institutions. Currently over 5,000 students are studying on UHI courses or undertaking postgraduate research.
