Harpers trainee wins top essay prize
Working time paper lands 5,000 euro EELA award
A trainee solicitor at Harper Macleod has won a Europe-wide employment law award in Athens.
Shareen Auckbarallee's 20,000 word essay, on the Working Time Directive and its interaction with national minimum wage legislation in the UK, was voted "head and shoulders above the rest" by the judging panel for the first European Employment Lawyers Association Award.
As well as a prize of 5,000 euro, Shareen has won membership of the EELA for one year. She presented a paper based on her essay to over 350 delegates at the EELA annual conference in Athens last week. The topic is timely, with the European Parliament deciding earlier this week to end the UK’s opt-out.
Shareen described herself as "thrilled and extremely honoured" to win the award. "It was a privilege to represent Harper Macleod at the conference in Athens and I hope other young Scottish lawyers will be encouraged to participate in events of this kind in the future."
