Executive considers new prison to replace Peterhead and Craiginches

Peterhead Prison, which houses some of Scotland's worst sex offenders, and Craiginches in Aberdeen could be replaced by a single institution in the Peterhead area, according to today's Press and Journal.

Peterhead had been earmarked for closure in 2002, but was saved after a campaign to keep it open.

Plans to close Craiginches' women's unit later this month also fit with the likely merger.

However the Scottish Prison Service refused to confirm the suggestion of the merger, saying it was only one of a number of options being considered.

An SPS spokeswoman added: "It could be everything from the status quo, which I don't think is possible, up to something really radical and every step in between."
