Drugs campaign nets £1.5m

Nearly 600 arrests made and £1.5m seized in six week drive against drugs

The Drug Dealers Don't Care Campaign has resulted in £1.5million in drugs and cash being seized and led to nearly 600 arrests.

Police chiefs and the Scottish Executive said the campaign had been an outstanding success. During the six week campaign Crimestoppers Scotland saws its drugs related telephone calls surge by 428%.

Inspector Gregor Campbell, national co-ordinator for Crimestoppers Scotland, said: "We all know that drug dealers don't care, but what has emerged is the message that the Scottish public do care and care enough to pick up the phone and tell Crimestoppers about those who are imposing fear and misery in their own communities.

"The Crimestoppers Scotland unit matched the public's response and passed 3,600 vital pieces of information about drug dealers to forces. It is crucial however for the public to see that their anonymous call can and does make a difference, and the results achieved to date in terms of arrests and drug seizures support this."
