Former licensing board clerk crosses to other side

Janet Hood has switched horses and become Head of BII (British Institute of Innkeeping) Scotland, the professional body for the licensed retail sector.

Mrs Hood, who is also chair of the Law Society of Scotland's In-House Lawyers' Group, will take up her new position from 4 July. A local authority solicitor for 21 years, she brings much experience to the position, including service as depute clerk to the Aberdeenshire South Licensing Board.

She will support Paul Barton, Chairman of BII Scotland Region and be helped by the head office and regional support teams.

One of her first duties will be to attend the first meeting of Scotland’s National Licensing Forum, on 4 July. Another will be to finalise the location of the BII Scotland office in Edinburgh. The city has been chosen as it will allow her team to be close to the Scottish Parliament, currently considering the Licensing (Scotland) Bill.

The BII Scotland will be pushing out a number of BIIAB qualifications developed specifically for the Scottish market.

Janet Hood said: “I am absolutely thrilled to have been appointed to this post. I have admired the work of the BII for a number of years and have actively promoted the development and uptake of the Scottish Licensees’ Certificate, which I believe is the best training package for incoming licensees, managers and board members.

She concluded: “I hope to work closely with the trade and regulators across Scotland to promote best practice, good training and effective management of licensed premises in the future and look forward to starting my new career in July.”
