Weapons crime court sits

24 Jun 05

The first three cases were heard at a special weapons court in Greenock

Scotland's only court dedicated to weapons crime sat for the first time yesterday.

Sheriff John Herald at Greenock Sheriff Court heard three cases involving teenagers accused of carrying weapons, including martial-art nunchucks.

The court will hear cases from the Inverclyde area, where an estimated 300 people were reported to the procurator fiscal in 2004-5 for using or carrying weapons.

Some of the most frightening weapons seized by the police, including a samurai sword and a crossbow, were put on show by Strathclyde Police at the launch of the court.
