Magic mushrooms seized after law change

Police raids across Scotland follow the reclassification of fresh magic mushrooms as a Class A drug

Police in Lanarkshire and Edinburgh have seized thousands of pounds worth of magic mushrooms following changes to the law.

So called magic mushrooms contain the chemical psilocybin and were reclassified as a Class A drug by the UK Government recently. The Drugs Act 2005 now makes fresh mushrooms, as well as those dried and prepared for use, illegal.

Anyone caught possessing, supplying or selling the mushrooms now faces prosecution and a possible prison sentence.

A 33-year-old man has been reported to the Procurator Fiscal after mushrooms weighing 3.5kg and with an estimated street value of £6,000 were found in his home in Newarthill, Lanarkshire.

In addition, Lothian and Borders Police recovered mushrooms from two shops in Edinburgh.
