Gordon Lockerbie, a senior partner at Edinburgh legal firm Menzies Dougal, was found hanged on railings outside his office in Bruntsfield Crescent yesterday.
He took his own life just days after it was announced that the firm, where he worked for over 20 years, was to merge with Gillespie Macandrew.
Under the merger, two of Menzies Dougal's partners Colin Mackay and Gerard Clark will become partners in Gillespie Macandrew, while Alan McLaren will take on a role as a consultant in the amalgamated firm. It is not known what role Mr Lockerbie would have played.
Edinburgh solicitor Leslie Deans was quoted as saying in the Scotsman that Mr Lockerbie was "one of life's nice guys" and that he is utterly devastated at the loss.
Mr Lockerbie was separated from his wife and leaves three sons and a daughter.
