Action Group claims government should write off £1.9 billion overpaid to poor families
Thousands of families in Scotland may get to keep overpaid tax credits, if a planned legal action is successful.
Anti-poverty campaigners are considering filing a case against the Revenue & Customs Department to prevent the government taking back the £1.9 billion it paid out to claimants across the UK in the first year of the family tax credit system.
The government's attempt to take back the money has left thousands of families struggling to make ends meet.
The Child Poverty Action Group is considering a judicial review of the system so that the money should not be taken back, when it was the fault of Revenue & Customs for overpaying in the first place.
